What is it all about?

IdentiChat is a chat interface to identi.ca. What this means is that you can see and use your identi.ca account as a chatroom, and have real-time conversations with your contacts.

We believe that a chatroom with real-time updates is a much more fluid interface than static web-pages.

How do I make it work?

First thing you need is an identi.ca ID. If you don't have one, you can create it on identi.ca's registration page. You can also use someone else's ID on IdentiChat.

For those of you who know what a Jabber chatroom is, simply use your favorite jabber client to join the room your-identica-id@identichat.prosody.im. There are step-by-step guides available for various clients:

  • Pidgin
  • Gajim
  • Psi

You can also use the web-based Speeqe client to get a preview of IdentiChat. Just visit http://www.speeqe.com/room/your-identica-id@identichat.prosody.im/

Once you are in the room, you can see all your subscriptions in the room participant list. Messages sent by people you are subscribed to, or messages directed to you appear in the room as soon as they are posted.

Note that you can also join rooms of other people. Read on to see how to post messages.

How can I send messages?

While you can see messages, to start posting messages to your identi.ca account, you need to register with IdentiChat. To do that, simply send the following to any IdentiChat room:

!register identica-username identica-password

And then you should be able to post messages to identi.ca from any IdentiChat room.

Anything else I need to know?

Here are a few features you might find useful:

Most Jabber/XMPP clients auto-complete nicknames. You can use this, and IdentiChat will automatically adds '@' before nicknames for you (using the list of nicknames in the room).

Identi.ca supports #hashtags, and so does IdentiChat. You can join rooms like #tagname@identichat.prosody.im to keep track of posts with a particular tag.
